Starting acupuncture for the first time can bring up a mix of curiosity, excitement, and maybe even a little nervousness. Many people aren’t sure what the session will feel like, what the needles are like, or how the process works. My goal is always to make your first visit feel comfortable, welcoming, and empowering. When you know what to expect, it’s easier to relax and get the most out of your treatment.
Your first session usually begins with a conversation. I’ll ask about your main concerns, your health history, your lifestyle, and any symptoms you’ve been experiencing. This isn’t just a formality. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), every detail helps paint a picture of your overall health. For example, your sleep patterns, digestion, stress levels, and energy throughout the day all help me understand how your body is functioning as a whole. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Everything you say helps guide your treatment plan.
After we talk, I may look at your tongue and feel your pulse. These are traditional diagnostic tools that help identify patterns of imbalance. Your tongue can show signs of heat, cold, dryness, or stagnation, while your pulse can reveal the strength and quality of your qi. These tools may seem unusual at first, but they offer valuable insight into how your body is functioning internally.
Once we have a clear picture of your needs, we’ll move on to the treatment. You’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table, fully clothed or with only the necessary areas exposed. I’ll make sure you’re warm, supported, and relaxed before placing any needles. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin — much thinner than anything used for injections or blood draws. Most people are surprised by how gentle they feel.
When a needle is inserted, you may feel a tiny pinch, a dull ache, a warm sensation, or nothing at all. These sensations are normal and usually fade quickly. Once the needles are in place, many people feel a wave of relaxation wash over them. Some feel heavy and grounded, others feel light and floaty, and many drift into a peaceful nap. This deep relaxation is a sign that your nervous system is shifting into a healing state.
The needles typically stay in place for 20 to 40 minutes. During this time, you can rest quietly, breathe deeply, or simply enjoy the stillness. I’ll check in periodically to make sure you’re comfortable. If anything feels uncomfortable, we can adjust it right away.
After the needles are removed, you may feel calm, refreshed, or pleasantly tired. Some people notice immediate relief in their symptoms, while others feel gradual improvement over the next few days. It’s also common to feel more aware of your body — noticing subtle shifts in tension, energy, or mood.
Your treatment plan will depend on your goals. Some conditions respond quickly, while others require a series of sessions to create lasting change. We’ll discuss what makes sense for your situation and adjust as needed.
Your first acupuncture session is an opportunity to slow down, tune in, and give your body the support it needs. My goal is always to create a safe, comfortable space where you feel heard, cared for, and empowered on your healing journey.
